Family support
Sustainable families build sustainable futures. Caregivers and siblings matter too.
Important disclaimer
This guide is educational and written for families and self-advocates. It is not medical, legal, or financial advice. Laws and benefits vary by state. Always consult qualified professionals (pediatricians, developmental specialists, special-education attorneys/advocates, financial planners who understand disability benefits) for decisions about care, school services, or money.
For primary caregivers
- Name your top three weekly stress drains and pick one to redesign
- Keep a "good enough" home standard during hard seasons
- Schedule medical/school admin in batches to reduce context switching
- Protect sleep like a medical intervention
- Join spaces that are affirming - leave spaces that only trade in fear
For siblings
Siblings may feel proud, confused, overlooked, or responsible beyond their years. Offer age-appropriate explanations, one-on-one time, and permission to have their own feelings without guilt.
Build a village (even a small one)
-
1
List practical needs
Rides, respite hours, meal help, form-filling, school meeting backup - specifics get better yeses.
-
2
Assign roles
One friend for emergencies, one for paperwork accountability, one for emotional check-ins.
-
3
Use community wisely
Try our moderated Brighter Pathways community for peer connection - not as a replacement for clinical care.
